As I read this novel, I found myself mentally casting the movie in my head, because there is a cinematic quality to the book that cannot be overlooked. A Book of the Month and Richard and Judy pick, this smart and thrilling novel. As the novel unwinds, the reader, or at least this reader, is surprised by a brilliant plot twist toward the end of the saga, and a horrific denouement that is perhaps not so unexpected if we've been paying attention. We know it's not Tobias, and most probably not Quentin, these being personas he adopts for the "extracurricular activities," in which he and his wife participate, seemingly as partners. I went back over the novel a few times to see if the reader actually knows the narrator's real name. ![]() Along the way, we learn about the children, the friends, the acquaintances, the everyday life in the affluent area in which the family lives, and the victims, but not too much about the narrator, husband of Millicent, the "lovely wife" of the title. ![]() We're your neighbors, the parents of your kid's friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with. ![]() Almost from the beginning we know what the couple is doing we gradually learn the why and the how. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Queenie by michael korda![]() ![]() ![]() Of course, a novel isn’t much of anything if it can’t stand on its own - and Queenie passes that test with flying colors. (Indeed, only a portion of the legend’s escapades figure in the 650-page book.) ![]() Judging by what is known of her life - a story detailing all Oberon’s affairs would rival the Encyclopaedia Britannica. But this is not the case with Queenie, either. Second, it is often necessary in such novels to take rampant liberties with the facts, since the lives of most people - even stars - don’t necessarily offer non-stop adventure-drama. It may be sum and substance of the life of Merle Oberon, but it reads like Sydney Sheldon. First, enjoyment often hinges on the reader’s familiarity with the real person - which, happily, is not the case with Queenie, a new novel by Michael Korda. Novels based on the lives of celebrities frequently run into two problems. ![]() 5/9/2023 0 Comments Slice by Steven Herrick![]() Please welcome the very talented Steven Herrick to blogland. His books have been shortlisted for the CBCA Book of the Year Steven Herrick is the author of twenty-two books of poetry and fiction for children and young adults. You're rooting for this boy the whole time - so it comes as a complete surprise what he choose to do in the end. What shy kid doesn't have such fantasies? Rudy is determined to escape from summer camp hell, and his attempts to do so are laugh out loud funny. ![]() ![]() But Rudy is no "loser" - when forced to take part in things, he EXCELS and blows everyone away. I adored Rudy as a kid because I identified with his antisocial tendencies - he preferred his own space and doing his own thing, and hated the forced camaraderie of summer camp and the constant perkiness of the camp counsellors, especially Chip (oh, poor Chip). I WANT TO GO HOME is exactly as I remember, full of fun and shenanigans from young antisocial curmudgeon Rudy Miller and his sidekick Mike. ![]() Gimme the original artwork! That it does so is also very good news: It’s the first in what promises to be a sprawling trilogy, continuing to the present day, which the author has titled A Key to All Mythologies in what is presumably a wink at its far-from-modest ambitions-yes, à la Middlemarch.
